DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (June 1, 2017) – Mercy College softball sophomore McKaily Cusumano (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) has been named the Female Student-Athlete of the Month for May.
Cusumano concluded the season with a strong month of May, finishing with a 4-1 record and 1.26 ERA in leading the Mavericks to their first-ever ECC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. The sophomore began the month with a complete game and one earned run allowed in Mercy’s first game of the ECC Tournament against LIU Post on May 4th. The Second Team All-ECC selection followed that up with an eight-inning complete game and one earned run allowed in game two of the Tournament against NYIT on May 6th. Cusumano went on to pitch a complete-game shutout with eight strikeouts against LIU Post to give the Mavericks the ECC Championship, while the sophomore was tabbed the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. The sophomore tossed another complete game victory in Mercy’s 3-1 victory over New Haven in the NCAA Tournament on May 11th. Cusumano ended the month with 30 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings pitched.
