Mercy College to Add Men's and Women's Lacrosse for 2009-10

DOBBS FERRY, NY - Director of Athletics Pat Kennedy announced today that Mercy College will add varsity men's and women's lacrosse for the 2009-10 academic year.  The two new additions will bring Mercy's NCAA Division II sponsored programs to a total of 16 sports.

"We are excited to bring these two programs to Mercy College," said Kennedy. "Lacrosse continues to grow in our region and it will only help add to the profile of our institution. We look forward to building them from the ground up and watching each program develop."

A search for head coaches of each program will begin immediately and the 2008-09 academic year will be utilized to recruit student-athletes for competition in 2009-10.

Both programs will compete in the East Coast Conference (ECC).  Traditionally it has been one of the toughest for both men's and women's lacrosse.  On the men's side, NYIT has won three of the last six national titles, while C.W. Post and Adelphi have each captured a pair of Division II crowns in the last eight years.

Mercy College currently sponsors 14 sports, seven for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, soccer and tennis) and seven for women (basketball, cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, soccer, softball and volleyball).
