Mercy College Athletics Announces Fall CHAMPS/Life Skills Presentations

DOBBS FERRY, NY - Mercy College Assistant Director of Athletics Ashlee Kelly announced dates for three presentations as part of the department's CHAMPS/Life Skills (Challenging Athletes' Minds for Personal Success) program in the fall of 2008.

The first in the series will be the Ultimate Road Trip, sponsored by Monster.com, on Wednesday, September 10 at 6:30 p.m in the Mercy Hall Community Room. The presentation will center on the transition into college life and will include activities such as time management skills, the power of internships/co-ops, establishing great grades, and the importance of campus and community involvement. Attendance is mandatory for all new student-athletes and is open to freshmen and transfers from the general student population.

On Monday, September 22, Dr. Emmett L. Gill will address the topics of hazing and social networks and how they affect student-athletes.  Dr. Gill's presentation will also take place in the Mercy Hall Community Room at 6:30 p.m. It is mandatory for all student-athletes and open to the campus community.

For the second year in a row, Mercy College will host Ultimate Money Skills, also sponsored by Monster.com. This presentation about financial and credit management during college and after is mandatory for all student-athletes. It will be held on Monday, November 10, at 6:30 p.m. in the Mercy Hall Community Room and is also open to the campus community.

Mercy's CHAMPS/Life Skills program is a comprehensive progression of workshops, lectures, community activities, and campus wide events that student-athletes can become involved in over the course of their collegiate careers.  The goal is for student-athletes to maximize their overall collegiate experience and to help them develop the necessary "life skills" to become responsible and productive citizens in the greater societal and world communities.  As designed by the N.C.A.A., the CHAMPS/Life Skills program at Mercy College addresses five key areas: academic excellence, athletic excellence, personal development, career development, and community service.
