Six-Run Seventh Inning Not Enough for Mercy Baseball

Despite a six-run seventh inning, the baseball team at Mercy College dropped a 10-6 decision at the University of Bridgeport on Saturday afternoon, in a game played at West Haven (Conn.) High School.

UB (27-11, 20-8 ECC) scored five times in the first inning, and built a 7-0 lead until the Mavericks (17-25, 10-17 ECC) exploded in the seventh. Six runs came across on five hits in the inning, including RBI hits from freshman Joe Terpstra (Pine Bush,N.Y./Pine Bush), junior Mike Gianzero (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury), senior Mike Ferrante (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach).

Bridgeport scored three more runs in the eighth, before the Mavericks came to bat in the top of the ninth. With two out, senior Matt Walsh (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) singled, followed by a walk from freshman Anthony Simon (Sloatsburg, N.Y./Suffern, N.Y.). Sophomore Andrew Bock (Malverne, N.Y./Valley Stream North) came to the plate, and flied out to centerfield, ending the game.

Mercy finishes the Bridgeport series on Sunday, with a 1:00 p.m. game at Bridgeport.
