Scouting the Mavericks
The Mavericks look to improve to 3-4 on the year with a pair of victories over the American International Yellow Jackets in this weekend's contests. Mercy is coming back from a five game road trip to South Catalina where they finished the trip 1-4. Leading the Mavericks is freshman Matteo Finocchi (Staatsburg, N.Y./FDR) who was named to the East Coast Conference (ECC) baseball weekly Honor Roll for Week Two. Finocchi made his college debut throwing five innings with no earned runs allowed and a 1-0 record in two appearances for the Mavericks. Also, starting the season off on the right foot is senior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y. / Coppin State University) who leads the team with three RBI and one home run.
Scouting the Yellow Jackets
American International is entering this weekend's doubleheader as their season's opening series. The Yellow Jackets concluded their 2016 season with a 12-34 overall record and were 6-12 in the Northeast-10 Southwest Division. The Yellow Jackets returns senior Chris Starcun who was named to the NE-10 Second Team at the conclusion of last season. Starcun led the Yellow Jackets hitting a .318 average while playing in all 46 games. He recorded 55 hits, seven homers, nine doubles, three triples, and drove in 31 runs. Also returning for the Yellow Jackets is sophomore Brendan Carter, who earned a spot on the NE-10 All-Rookie Team last season. Carter started in 17 conference games for the Yellow Jackets and batted .212. The sophomore was 16-of-18 in stolen bases and scored 15 total runs.
