Baseball Takes on Queens This Weekend

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 20, 2017) - The Mercy College baseball team will begin their four-game series with East Coast Conference foe Queens College beginning on Friday, April 21st in a single game set for 3:00 p.m. The Knights and Mavericks will then square up for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 22nd at 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. and will close the series on Sunday, April 23rd with game time set to start at 12:00 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

The Mavericks enter this weekend's series looking to gain four East Coast Conference wins as they take on the Queens College Knights. Despite a home run from sophomore Anthony Murphy, the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision to ECC foe Molloy College on Monday afternoon. Murphy went 1-for-2 with his first collegiate home run, while senior Charles Fina went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Leading the Mavericks at the plate is junior Joseph Sadallah, who is sporting a team best .344 batting average, a .542 slugging percentage, 33 hits, 18 runs scored, and six triples. Another threat at the plate is Fina, who currently holds a .338 batting average, a .414 on base percentage, 26 hits, and a team best eight doubles. On the mound for Mercy is senior Matt Nalbone, who has thrown a team high 48.1 innings, striking out 36 batters. Nalbone was named the Corvias Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games ending April 16th, after he tossed a four-hit shutout to earn the win at Molloy on Friday. The senior went the distance with seven strikeouts to earn his third win of the season.

 

Scouting the Knights

The Knights enter this weekend's series after falling 10-2 at LIU Post on Monday afternoon. The Knights were led by senior Joe Morris, who went 2-for-2 with a walk. Junior Karl Klesin went 1-for-1 with a run scored for Queens. Leading the Knights at the plate for the season is junior Thomas Parish, who has recorded a team high 25 hits and 22 runs scored. He also has recorded eight RBI, five doubles, and one triple for Queens. On the mound for the Knights is freshman pitcher Nick Morena, who is currently sporting a 2.98 earned run average and has recorded three wins. Morena was recognized as the East Coast Conference (ECC) Rookie of the Week on Monday following his performance in the Knights' 7-2 win over Molloy on Monday, April 10th.  Morena gave up just two unearned runs in a complete game effort against the Lions. He allowed only six hits over the full nine innings, while tallying five strikeouts with no walks.
