Arcabascio Records Three RBI on Senior Day as Baseball Hosts St. Thomas Aquinas

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 6, 2017) – Despite three RBI from senior Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Quinnipiac University), the Mercy College baseball team dropped 16-6 and 4-0 decisions to St. Thomas Aquinas College on Senior Day in an ECC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (10-31, 4-20 ECC) have now dropped ten in a row, while the Spartans (36-13, 19-5 ECC) remain in the No. 1 spot in the ECC.

Game 1: STAC 16, Mercy 6

The Mavericks got off to a slow start in game one of the afternoon, as the Spartans were able to put twelve runs on the board in three innings before the Mavericks were able to respond. Arcabascio led the Mavericks to home plate in the bottom of the fourth inning, when he was able to blast a single to right field with the bases loaded, driving senior Randal Mendez (New York, N.Y. / Coppin State University) and sophomore Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill) home for the Mavericks first two runs of the contest.

The fifth and sixth inning would remain scoreless for both teams. The Spartans had another four-run tear in the top of the seventh inning, when they were able to plate four runs off three hits.

The Mavericks were able to score four runs themselves in the bottom of the eighth inning. Once again, Arcabascio was able to bring Murphy home to score the first run of the inning when he grounded out to second base. A walk for senior Charles Fina (Kingston, N.Y. / Ulster County CC) would allow Mendez to reach home plate to give the Mavericks their fourth run of the contest. Next up was senior James Waters (Troy, N.Y. / Fulton Montgomery CC) , who recorded an RBI that allowed juniors Ralph Pasols (Middletown, N.Y. / Orange CC) and Dee Boyles (Sidney, N.Y. / Fulton Montgomery CC) to score.

The Mavericks were unable to plate any further runs, and eventually fell to the Spartans 16-6. Mendez went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Murphy went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Arcabascio went 1-for-4 with three RBI. For the Spartans, Greg Dawber went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI. Joseph Pena went 3-for-5 with one RBI.

Freshman Spencer Goyette (Honesdale, Pa / Honesdale) threw 4.1 innings for the Mavericks and recorded one strikeout. Anthony Morris made the start on the mound for the Spartans, throwing six innings and striking out four batters.

Game 2: STAC 4, Mercy 0

Despite graduate student James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y. / Cornwall) tossing a complete seven innings and striking out four batters, the Mavericks were unable to get on the board in the seven innings of play in the nightcap.

The Mavericks were unable to fight offensively, as Chris Cepeda earned the win for the Spartans after tossing seven innings and eventually earning the no-hitter.

Leading the Spartans offense in the nightcap was Pena, who went 1-for-4 with two runs scored.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow against the Spartans at 12 p.m.
