No. 7 – Baseball Defeats Nationally-Ranked Le Moyne at Home
Our No. 7 moment in year three of our top-10 goes to baseball who defeated nationally-ranked Le Moyne College on March 21st.
The Mavericks entered the contest with a 4-8 record and faced a Dolphins squad that was nationally ranked for the first time since February 12, 2013 at No. 24. Le Moyne entered game one of the doubleheader with an 11-6 record, having won three straight games against LIU Post the previous weekend.
Mercy got on the board first with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead. Senior Charles Fina drove in the first run on a fielder's choice, bringing home freshman John Mooradian to make it 1-0. Sophomore Joseph Sadallah later scored after Fina was caught stealing at second bring the score to 2-0. Senior Randal Mendez capped off the scoring with a home run to left field that put the Mavericks ahead 3-0 after just one inning of play.
The three runs would be more than enough for the Mercy pitching staff as senior Matt Nalbone earned the win with two innings pitched without allowing a hit. Senior Kenny Costa and graduate student James Patterson added two innings apiece with one unearned run allowed. Freshman Matteo Finocchi closed out the game with a scoreless seventh inning to preserve the 3-1 win and pick up a save.
Sophomore Anthony Murphy went 2-for-3 for the Mavericks and Mendez went 1-for-3 to lead Mercy at the plate.
