DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (July 26, 2017) – For the third year in a row, Mercy College Athletics will recap the year by counting down the Top-10 most memorable moments of the 2016-17 season, with all 10 sports represented.
Mercy College Athletics will release a Top-10 moment, as chosen by the athletics staff, with a weekly recap every Wednesday throughout the summer, culminating with the top moment from the 2016-17 athletic year being unveiled on August 23rd.
No. 5 – Field Hockey Records Most Wins in Program History and Earns First-Ever ECAC Tournament Appearance
Our No. 5 moment in year three of our top-10 goes to field hockey who finished with the most wins in program history after going 7-13 in the 2016 season. The squad also earned their first-ever berth into the ECAC DII Field Hockey League Tournament.
The Mavericks entered the season picked fourth in the ECAC Division II Field Hockey League Preseason Poll under first-year Head Coach Deirdre O'Neill. The Mavericks began their season with a tough loss to Franklin Pierce on the road, before defeating No. 10 Limestone College in their ECAC and home opener on Sunday, September 4th.
The Mavericks proved to have a tough schedule, as they suffered four losses before getting back in the win column against St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday, September 27th. Mercy was then able to record their third win of the season on Tuesday, October 4th when they defeated Molloy College on the road.
Mercy then earned their second victory over St. Thomas Aquinas when they traveled across the river to record a 3-1 victory, increasing their win total to four. The Mavericks were then able to record their fifth win of the season in the come-from-behind victory over Southern Connecticut State University, where they scored four goals in the second half to overcome a two-goal deficit.
The Mavericks kept the winning momentum alive as they defeated Molloy College in a 4-1 victory on Saturday, October 22nd, matching their win total from the 2016 season.
The Mavericks then made history on Sunday, October 30th when they defeated Newberry College 3-1. With this win, the squad set a school record for wins in a season and also earned themselves the No. 4 seed in the ECAC Tournament for the first time in program history.
As a result of the success on the field, the Mavericks earned numerous weekly honors along with postseason recognition. Vanessa Soler recorded ECAC Second Team honors, Jackie Ballin was named ECC Offensive Player of the Year and Rachel Gumowski earned ECC Defensive Honorable Mention recognition.
Schedule for the Top-10 Moments of the 2016-17 Season
Every Wednesday for the next 10 weeks, the Mercy College Athletics Department will release the Top-10 moments one at a time beginning with the No. 10 moment on Wednesday, June 21. The No. 1 moment will be unveiled on Wednesday, August 23.
