VALHALLA, N.Y. (Jan. 28, 2017) – Despite a game-high-tying 20 points from graduate student Ryan Hickey (Smithtown, N.Y./Dowling College), the Mercy College men's basketball team dropped an 82-72 decision to Daemen College in ECC action on Saturday afternoon at Westchester Community College.
The Mavericks (2-18, 0-12 ECC) remain winless in ECC play, while the Wildcats (14-6, 8-4 ECC) have won four games in a row.
Hickey added five rebounds and four assists, while sophomore Amir Atkins (Alexandria, Va./Hagerstown CC) continued his strong play with 16 points off the bench. Senior William Robinson (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nyack College) netted 13 points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes of action. Senior Raphael Jennings (Washington, D.C./ASA College) contributed eight points, five rebounds and four assists.
Daemen was led by Supreme Hannah who had a game-high-tying 20 points along with eight rebounds.
Mercy once again got off to a strong start as they jumped out to a 9-2 lead at the 17:19 mark of the first half. The visitors cut the deficit to two, 9-7, with just under 16 minutes remaining, but the Mavericks followed with a 17-2 run to take their largest lead of the game, 26-9, with 10:51 left before halftime.
Hickey gave Mercy a 12-point lead, 40-28, at the 2:27 mark before Daemen closed the half on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 40-34 at intermission. The Mavericks shot 48.5 percent from the floor and 55.6 percent from beyond the arc on their way to leading the entire first half.
Daemen opened the second half by getting within three, 42-39, on an Arif Mehmetaj layup. However, Mercy showed some resiliency and followed with a 15-6 run, capped off by a Hickey three, to increase the lead to 12, 57-45, with 15:27 remaining.
The Mavericks held an 11-point advantage, 61-50, with 12:53 remaining, but the Wildcats answered with 15 straight points to take a 65-61 lead at the 7:34 mark. Atkins followed with a trifecta to trim the Daemen lead to one, but the guests put together an 8-0 run to put the lead at nine, 73-64, with 3:31 on the clock. Mercy could get no closer than six points as Daemen held on for the victory.
Mercy shot 40.9 percent (27-of-66) from the floor, 40.0 percent (10-of-25) from beyond the arc and 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from the foul line. Daemen shot 50.8 percent (31-of-61) from the floor, 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from long distance and 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the charity stripe. Daemen held a 43-36 edge on the boards and a 22-12 advantage in points off turnovers.
