WORCESTER, Mass. (Jan. 30, 2017) – Despite a game-high 28 points from senior William Robinson (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nyack College), the Mercy College men's basketball team suffered a 79-62 setback to Assumption College in non-conference action on Monday night at Laska Gymnasium.

The Mavericks (2-19) have dropped 11 games in a row, while the Greyhounds (6-15) snap a two-game losing streak with the win.

Robinson went 12-of-20 from the floor and recorded ten rebounds to pick up his fifth double-double of the season. Junior Marko Kozul (Astoria, N.Y./Felician University) contributed nine points and seven rebounds and graduate student Ryan Hickey (Smithtown, N.Y./Dowling College) netted eight points and a team-high three assists.

Assumption was led by Damien Rance who had a team-high 18 points, while Branislav Vujadinovic finished with a double-double by way of 17 points and 14 rebounds.

The hosts jumped out to an 18-13 lead after a Rance layup at the 10:30 mark of the first half. The Greyhounds increased the lead to six, 28-22, with 3:34 remaining in the half. However, the Mavericks closed the half on a 7-0 run, capped off by a Hickey three right before the end of the half, to give Mercy a 29-28 lead at halftime.

Assumption opened the second half with the first three points of the frame to take a 31-29 lead just ten seconds into the half. Robinson tied the game up at 31-31 after a pair of free throws before the hosts scored four in a row to take a 35-31 lead at the 18:30 mark.

A Jefferson Francois (New York, N.Y./Hostos CC) layup at the 13:41 mark made it a one-point game, 46-45, but the Greyhounds responded with a 16-5 run to take a 62-50 lead with eight minutes left, forcing a Mercy timeout. Robinson trimmed the deficit to nine, 65-56, with a layup with 5:24 on the clock, but Assumption put the game away with a 14-4 run that put the lead at a game-high 19 points, 79-60, with 25 seconds left. The Greyhounds were aided by 75.9 percent shooting in the second half in overtaking the Mavericks.

Mercy shot 34.3 percent (24-of-70) from the floor, 15.8 percent (3-of-19) from beyond the arc and 55.0 percent (11-of-20) from the foul line. Assumption shot 63.6 percent (35-of-55) from the field, 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from downtown and 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from the charity stripe. The Greyhounds held a 38-35 edge on the boards, while the Mavericks held a 15-2 advantage in second chance points.
