ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Feb. 4, 2017) – Despite a combined 47 points from senior William Robinson (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nyack College) and graduate student Ryan Hickey (Smithtown, N.Y./Dowling College), the Mercy College men's basketball team suffered a 92-78 setback to ECC foe Molloy College on Saturday afternoon at Quealy Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (2-20, 0-13 ECC) remain winless in ECC play, while the Lions (13-9, 9-4 ECC) have won three games in a row.
Robinson led the Mavericks with his sixth double-double of the season by way of 24 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Hickey dropped in 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting, while adding five rebounds and four assists. Senior Raphael Jennings (Washington, D.C./ASA College) netted 12 points, six rebounds and a game-high-tying five assists.
Molloy was led by Jaylen Morris who scored a game-high 42 points on 18-of-24 shooting.
Mercy got off to a strong start as Robinson recorded back-to-back layups to give the Mavericks an early 4-0 lead at the 18:43 mark. Mercy held a 10-7 advantage at the 16:25 mark of the first half following a Robinson jumper. However, the hosts responded with a 10-2 run to take a 17-12 lead with 14:11 left in the opening half.
A Jennings layup at the 9:25 mark cut the deficit to three, 25-22, but Molloy ensued with a 16-4 run to take their largest lead of the half, 41-26, with four minutes showing on the clock. The Mavericks ended the half on a 4-0 run, capped off by a Jennings half-court buzzer beater that made it 49-39 heading into halftime.
The deficit remained ten, 53-43, for the Mavericks at the 16:40 mark of the second half after a Hickey jumper. The Lions would go on an 11-2 run that increased their lead to 19, 64-45, with 14:19 remaining, forcing a Mercy timeout.
Out of the timeout, the Mavericks went on a 13-4 run that cut the deficit back to ten, 68-58, with 11 minutes on the clock. Molloy once again had an answer and put the lead up to a game-high 21 points, 84-63, with just six minutes remaining. Mercy continued to battle and followed with a 12-0 run, ended by a Hickey three, that made it just a nine-point game, 84-75, with 3:55 left. However, that would be the closest the Mavericks could get as Molloy ended the contest on an 8-3 run to seal the victory.
Mercy shot 46.9 percent (30-of-64) from the floor, 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from beyond the arc and 64.7 percent (11-of-17) from the foul line. Molloy shot 65.1 percent (41-of-63) from the field, 20.0 percent (2-of-10) from long distance and 80.0 percent (8-of-10) from the charity stripe. Mercy held a 35-26 edge on the boards, while the Lions held a 24-12 advantage in points off turnovers and had 64 points in the paint.
