Marzocca, Poppe Lead Men's Lacrosse to 10-8 Victory in Season Opener at AIC
SPRINGFIELD, MASS. (Feb. 20, 2013) – Senior attackman Joe Poppe (Elbridge, N.Y.) scored four goals and senior midfielder Mike Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y.) recorded six points as the Mercy College men's lacrosse team opened its season with a 10-8 victory at American International College on Saturday evening.
Mercy forced AIC into 27 turnovers while committing only 20 and held slight edges in faceoffs, shots, ground balls and clears.
The Mavericks got off to a great start as Poppe netted a pair of goals halfway through the first quarter and on a man-up opportunity with 2:37 remaining.
AIC responded with four of the next five scores to take a 4-3 lead, but Mercy found an equalizer when Marzocca connected with sophomore attackman Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y.) on a late goal to tie things up heading into halftime.
AIC regained the lead two minutes into the third quarter but Poppe notched his third goal of the game just seconds later and put Mercy ahead when he added his fourth on an assist from senior defenseman Michael Munch (West Babylon, N.Y.) at the 6:37 mark. Freshman Connor McLachlan (Guilderland, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal on another Marzocca assists one minute later to give Mercy the two-goal lead, but AIC evened the score at 7-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
Senior midfielder Alex Martello (Montville, N.J.) found the net unassisted barely a minute into the final period to put Mercy up for good. Wood scored a man-down insurance goal on yet another Marzocca assist, and after AIC cut the lead back to one, Marzocca found the net on his own for the final tally of the match.
Marzocca finished with one goal and five assists while Poppe scored his four goals on just five total shots, with the one miss coming on a blind last-second attempt as time expired in the second quarter. Munch picked up six ground balls and caused two turnovers, as did junior midfielder Zack Zangle (West Babylon, N.Y.). Senior midfielder Blaze Yeager (Riverhead, N.Y.) won 10 of his 18 faceoffs, including his first six straight, while junior goalkeeper Mike Cashman (Bethpage, N.Y.) made eight saves in net.
Junior attackman Nick Amendt (Ponoka, Alberta, Canada) and sophomore attackman Jeff Sienkiewicz (Corning, N.Y.) led the Yellow Jackets with three points on two goals and one assist each. Sophomore midfielder Brian Kennedy (North Babylon, N.Y.) picked up six ground balls and won 10 of his 19 faceoffs. Freshman guard Alexis Buque (Whitbey, Ontario, Canada) managed 12 saves between the pipes.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks will look to make it two in a row at Assumption College in the Greyhounds' season-opener on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1:00 p.m.
