DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 2, 2014) – Junior Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y. / Seton Catholic Central) totaled a career-high 10 points to lead the Mercy College men's lacrosse team to a 16-7 victory over Post University on Wednesday afternoon.
Mercy improves to 7-3 with the win while Post drops to 3-8.
Wood wasted no time in getting onto the score sheet as he took a pass from senior Ryan Elfeld (Long Beach, N.Y. / Jacksonville Univ.) and put it into the back of the net just 1:22 into the game. Post equalized on a long-distance effort barely a minute later, but Mercy took control from there as Wood had a hand in four straight unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead with 4:23 left in the first quarter.
The Mavericks rode a 4-2 advantage in the second quarter to lead 10-4 at halftime and, after each team scored once in a quiet third, Mercy rattled off four more unanswered goals to stretch the lead to double digits at 15-5 with 7:52 remaining. Post would get two back before Mercy capped the game on a final tally with 48 seconds left for the 16-7 final score.
Wood scored six goals (three unassisted) and made four assists, including on the game-winner by junior Zack Haun (West Seneca, N.Y. / West Seneca East Senior), to extend his Division II lead in points per game With the Mavericks' midfielder decimated by injury, junior transfer Lucas Sarmiento (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / Suffolk County CC) stepped up to record a hat trick while Haun and sophomore Danny Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y. / Bethpage) recorded two points on a goal and assist apiece. Graduate student Kevin Glueckert (Bethpage, N.Y. / Univ. at Albany), senior Zack Zangle (West Babylon, N.Y. / West Babylon), sophomore Connor McLachlan (Guilderland, N.Y. / Guilderland) and freshmen Ross Schnitzer (Scarsdale, N.Y. / Loyola Univ. Md.) and Daniel Speicher (Seaford, N.Y. / Seaford) each scored once while junior Stephen Dunne (Melville, N.Y. / Half Hollow Hills East) and freshman Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) assisted once each.
Glueckert maintained his No. 3 national ranking in faceoff percentage going 14-for-20 and picking up a career-high 12 ground balls. Junior Owen Krezmien (Buffalo, N.Y. / Canisius College) led the defense with an outstanding eight ground balls and three caused turnovers, which were matched by Schnitzer and Zangle. Sophomore A.J. Pellati (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) made six saves to earn the win in the cage, while senior Mike Cashman (Bethpage, N.Y. / Bethpage) displayed some late-game acrobatics with five saves on six shots in the final seven minutes.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks will pick up East Coast Conference play as they host the University of the District of Columbia (2-5, 1-3) on Saturday, Apr. 5 at 12 p.m.
