DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 8, 2014) – Junior Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y. / Seton Catholic Central) jumpstarted a Mavericks rally with a game-high-tying four points as a shorthanded Mercy College men's lacrosse team fought East Coast Conference-leading No. 4 Dowling College right to the end on Tuesday afternoon.
Dowling improves to 8-2 overall and remains perfect at 4-0 in the ECC while Mercy is now 7-5 (0-5).
Dowling took control from the outset, surging out to a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and adding another quick tally to start the second period. Mercy was not about to bow out, however, and rattled off five straight goals – the first four of which Wood either scored or assisted – to head into halftime down just two at 7-5.
The Golden Lions struck for the only score in a quiet third quarter to lead by three heading into the fourth period, when senior Zack Zangle (West Babylon, N.Y. / West Babylon) stepped up on both sides of the ball to stop a number of Dowling attacks while scoring once and assisting on another. His performance kept the Mavericks within two goals until the 6:02 mark, when the Golden Lions rattled off a pair of goals within 41 seconds to take a four-goal lead. The Mavericks struck one final time with 1:48 to play, but Dowling left with the 11-8 victory.
Wood scored once and assisted on three other goals while sophomore Connor McLachlan (Guilderland, N.Y. / Guilderland) and senior Ryan Elfeld (Long Beach, N.Y. / Jacksonville Univ.) each scored twice, with both of McLachlan's coming from Wood in the second-quarter rally and Elfeld's in crunch time in the fourth quarter. Junior C.J. Fleming (Middletown, N.Y. / Herkimer County CC) and junior Owen Valance (Glen Cove, N.Y. / McDaniel College) registered the other tallies for the Mavericks while junior Lucas Sarmiento (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / Suffolk County CC) picked up a team-high six ground balls.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks will continue their ECC slate as they head upstate on Saturday, Apr. 12 to take on Roberts Wesleyan College (6-4, 2-3).
