Wood's Second Half Surge Leads Men's Lacrosse to 10-7 ECC Win Over RWC
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2014) – Junior Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y. / Seton Catholic Central) tallied six of his seven points in a crucial second half to lead the Mercy College men's lacrosse team to a 10-7 East Coast Conference victory over Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon.
Mercy improves to 8-5 overall and 1-5 in the ECC while Roberts Wesleyan falls to 6-5 (2-4).
Wood found junior Zack Haun (West Seneca, N.Y. / West Seneca East Senior) to open the scoring at the 9:56 mark in the first quarter, but the Redhawks snuck in two goals with 2:35 and 14 seconds remaining in the quarter, respectively, and added a third straight in the second quarter to take the 3-1 lead with 5:38 to play before halftime.
The Mavericks matched the Redhawks with three unanswered tallies of their own, including the go-ahead goal 14 seconds before halftime.
RWC equalized early in the third quarter but Wood took over from there, scoring three straight goals over 4:20 to send Mercy back out to a 7-4 lead with 3:58 on the clock.
The Redhawks were not finished yet, however, as they rattled off three goals in just 1:26 to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the fourth quarter. Wood would step back up, however, to have a hand in all three of the Mavericks' final tallies and seal the win on the road.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks will head to ECC rival Molloy College (6-5, 2-3) on Saturday, Apr. 19.
