Wood Fires Men's Lacrosse to Fourth Straight Win Over RV Molloy, 8-7 in OT
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 19, 2014) – Junior Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y. / Seton Catholic Central) fired the Mercy College men's lacrosse team to a fourth straight, 8-7 overtime victory at RV Molloy College to deny the Lions an East Coast Conference Championship bid on Saturday afternoon.
Mercy improves to 9-5 overall and 2-5 in the ECC while Molloy drops to 6-6 (2-4).
The Lions looked to be in control early as they rattled off the first three goals of the contest in the opening five minutes, including a pair by All-Conference candidate Joe Leonard, which would be his only points of the afternoon.
The Mavericks responded with three straight goals of their own, however, as senior Ryan Elfeld (Long Beach, N.Y. / Jacksonville Univ.) started things off with an unassisted goal with 4:34 left in the first quarter. Sophomore Kyle Stockton (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) connected with junior Zack Haun (West Seneca, N.Y. / West Seneca East Senior) on the man-up opportunity with 1:27 remaining in the quarter and graduate student Kevin Glueckert (Bethpage, N.Y. / Univ. at Albany) found sophomore Connor McLachlan (Guilderland, N.Y. / Guilerland) less than two minutes into the second quarter to tie the game.
The rivals battled fiercely to gain the edge as the first half wound down. Molloy went ahead on a man-up goal with 3:34 left to play, but Wood was not about to be shut out in the half as he sent a ball in to Glueckert to equalize just 39 seconds before the break.
Molloy was first to score coming out of the break, notching the go-ahead goal to make it 5-4 with 12:01 left in the third quarter, but Wood equalized on his own at the 7:38 mark. The Lions would score again just 52 seconds later and hold the 6-5 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
McLachlan notched the brace on an assist from Wood to tie the game for the fourth time with 10:29 remaining. Molloy bounced back ahead at the 7:01 mark, but Elfeld completed his brace as well with another unassisted goal with 5:03 left on the clock and the game went to overtime.
Mercy won the opening faceoff and ripped a pair of quick shots, the second of which was saved. The clear attempt was cut out by McLachlan, however, and, coming out of the timeout, Wood broke free and scored the game-winner to knock off the Lions for the fourth straight season.
Wood's four points led the Mavericks. Glueckert won eight faceoffs and added five ground balls while sophomore Danny Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y. / Bethpage) and junior Owen Krezmien (Buffalo, N.Y. / Canisius College) combined for their typical high output on defense with six ground balls and five caused turnovers. Sophomore A.J. Pellati (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) really stepped up in the cage, tying his season mark of 12 saves and posting his fifth game with an above-.600 save percentage (.632).
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks will take one final road trip to Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday, Apr. 22 before returning home for the regular season finale and Senior Day on Apr. 26.
