Lacerda and Van der Lara Lead Men's Soccer to a 1-0 Shutout Victory Over Jefferson

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 12, 2017) – Powered by the game-winning goal in the 10th minute from junior Lucca Lacerda (Passos, Brazil/Monroe College) and a key save on a penalty kick by senior Kwantarian Van der Lara (Stockholm, Sweden/Marshalltown CC), the Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Jefferson University on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (3-2) improve to 2-0 at home, while the Rams (1-2) lose for the first time on the road this year.

Lacerda had a team-high three shots, while Van der Lara made five saves to post his third shutout of the season.

Jefferson received a shot on goal from five different players, while Ben Sauer took the loss in goal.

Mercy looked to get back to their winning ways and wasted little time as Lacerda scored in the 10th minute of action to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. The junior dribbled past the defense and fired a shot to the right side of the goal, firing the ball past a diving Sauer to get his first goal of the season.

That shot on goal would be the lone shot on goal of the day for Mercy, but it would hold up as Van der Lara made two saves in the first half to keep the Mavericks up 1-0 at half.

The second half saw the Rams look for the equalizer and they drew their best chance in the 56th minute when they received a penalty kick opportunity after a Mercy handball in the box. However, Van der Lara was up to the challenge and stopped Seiji Rose's attempt to keep the Mavericks ahead.

Jefferson continued to apply pressure to the Mercy backline, but Van der Lara made two more saves in the frame and the Mavericks defense held its own the rest of the way to secure another shutout victory for Mercy.

The Rams held a 12-6 edge in shots and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 16th when they open up ECC play at UDC at 1 p.m.
