YAPHANK, N.Y. (Mar. 21, 2017) – Powered by a team-high four RBI on the day from junior Cassidy Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Monroe College), the Mercy College softball team began their 2017 season with a doubleheader sweep of Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday afternoon at Baseball Heaven. The Mavericks took the opener 5-0 before earning a 7-4 victory in the nightcap.
The Mavericks (2-0) start 2-0 for the first time since the 2009 season, while the Owls (2-8) have lost five games in a row.
Game 1: Mercy 5, SCSU 0
The Mavericks scored in their first at bat of the season as freshman Destini Bullock (San Diego, Calif./Helix) led off the game with a double and was later brought in by a Skania Lemus (Chula Vista, Calif./Southwestern CC) single to make it 1-0.
The contest remained 1-0 until the sixth inning when Wootten doubled home junior Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) after Lloyd singled to put Mercy up 2-0. The Mavericks broke open the game in the top of the seventh as junior Allie Pellizzaro (Victoria, British Columbia/Eastern Arizona CC) recorded an RBI double to left field and later scored on an RBI single by Lloyd. Senior Janelle Wade (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) also stole home in the inning to give the Mavericks a 5-0 lead heading into the Owls final at bat.
The trio of sophomore Kaylee Stevens (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal), freshman Kendall Meeks (Guysville, Ohio/Alexander) and sophomore McKaily Cusumano (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) surrendered just four Southern Connecticut hits in posting a combined shutout.
Lloyd went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Pellizzaro went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Wootten batted 1-for-4 with an RBI and Stevens went the first 4 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts to earn the win.
The Owls were led by Sara Buscetto who went 1-for-2 and pitcher Yesenia Evaristo went the distance in a losing effort.
Game 2: Mercy 7, SCSU 4
The Mavericks crushed 17 hits in the nightcap to earn the doubleheader sweep. However, the Owls got on the board first with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead after one inning of play.
Mercy got a run back in the second inning as Wootten drove in a run on a groundout after senior Julie Gross (Port Monmouth, N.J./Middletown North) and Lloyd singled. The score remained 3-1 heading into the third inning when the Mavericks exploded for three runs to take the lead for good at 4-3. Freshman Hannah Howery (Athens, Ohio/Alexander) recorded an RBI double, scoring Lemus, and Wootten knocked a two-RBI single to conclude the scoring in the frame.
The Mavericks concluded their scoring in the fourth with three runs on five hits to take a 7-3 lead. Pellizzaro and Howery both notched RBI singles in the inning to help put the game away.
Wootten went 1-for-4 with three RBI and Gross went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Howery went 2-for-5 with two RBI and Lloyd batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Pellizzaro batted 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI and Lemus ended the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Wade also recorded three hits and senior Jackie Kielty (Middleboro, Mass./Dean College) went 6 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts to earn the win.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 25th when they host LIU Post at 12 p.m.
