Softball Hosts St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday and Felician on Thursday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 17, 2017) - The Mercy College softball team looks to hold the No. 1 spot in the East Coast Conference as they host St. Thomas Aquinas College in an ECC doubleheader set for Tuesday, April 18th. The Mavericks will then step out of conference play and host Felician University in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 20th.

Scouting the Mavericks 

The Mavericks remain in first place in the ECC standings and look to go 4-0 on the week after earning a doubleheader split with East Coast Conference foe Molloy College in their home opener on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field. The Mavericks took the opener 6-3 before falling 8-3 in the nightcap. Mercy was powered by a combined four RBI from freshman Kendall Meeks and junior Baylee McCormick in game one, and two home runs from freshman Destini Bullock in the nightcap. Mercy surpassed their ECC win total from all of last year with the game one win. Leading Mercy at the plate is junior Morgan Lloyd, who leads the squad with a .498 batting average, a .656 slugging percentage, a .525 on base percentage and 44 hits. She also has recorded 19 RBI, 19 runs scored, seven doubles, and one triple. In the circle for Mercy is sophomore Kaylee Stevens, who is sporting a 2.14 earned run average, 55.2 innings pitched, and a team high 51 batters struck out.

 

Scouting the Spartans

St. Thomas Aquinas College enters tomorrow's ECC matchup after earning the doubleheader sweep over Philadelphia University on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans took game one 5-0 before earning a 7-3 victory in the nightcap. Julie Sosnicki earned the shutout win on the mound in game one, giving up just three hits in 7 innings with two strikeouts.  In game two, Valerie Winalski went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Leading the Spartans in the batter's box is sophomore Kelcy McGeehan, who is sporting a team best .325 batting average, along with 26 hits, 19 RBI, 13 runs scored, ten doubles, and three homeruns in 80 at bats. Another threat at the plate is sophomore Amanda Leone, who currently has a .316 batting average with 24 hits, 13 RBI, seven runs scored, six doubles, and one homerun. In the circle for the Spartans is Sosnicki, who has pitched a team high 90.1 innings with 64 strikeouts and a team best 2.09 earned run average.

 

Scouting the Golden Falcons

The Golden Falcons enter this week's non-conference doubleheader after falling 11-1 and 10-4 to No. 20 Caldwell University on Thursday afternoon. Despite having a lead on two separate occasions in game two, the Golden Falcons were unable to surpass the Cougars.  Felician was led by Racquel Manzo, who finished 2-for-2 plus a walk. Freshman Nicole Spiegelberg leads the Golden Falcons at the plate, sporting a .398 batting average with 39 hits, 29 RBI, 21 runs scored, eight homeruns and five doubles. On the mound for Felician is junior Ashley Owens, who has thrown 123.1 innings and struck out a 71 batters. Owens currently is sporting a 3.06 ERA and has eleven wins for the season.  The Golden Falcons will take on Wilmington University on Tuesday, April 18th before facing the Mavericks on Thursday, April 20th.
