2008 Mercy College Volleyball Schedule Announced
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Mercy College Head Women's Volleyball Coach Jennifer Addison announced the program's 2008 schedule on Thursday. This year's 29-match regular season slate is highlighted by battles with 2007 NCAA Tournament participants Kutztown, Dowling, and Adelphi.
"The competition will be strong this year," said Addison. "There are some great programs that we'll have to compete with, especially in our own conference such as Adelphi, NYIT, and Dowling which is one of the top teams in the country."
The Mavericks will open the campaign at Southern Connecticut State on August 28 to begin a stretch of six straight non-conference matches, including a tournament hosted by Kutztown August 29-30, and their home opener versus Post University on September 2. Mercy will start East Coast Conference (ECC) play on September 9 at Dowling, the first of two league matches against the Golden Lions. The Mavericks will take on each league opponent twice this year as the ECC has gone to a double round robin format.
"Playing twice will foster a more competitive season than the single round robin format and more teams will be in playoff contention down the stretch," said Addison. "For teams that are closely matched, the second meeting can swing in either direction. It will be interesting to see how it makes a difference and watch teams try to out-swing or out-smart each other."
After a home match with C.W. Post on September 11, Mercy will host a tri-match with non-league foes Felician and Pace on September 13. The Mavericks then go full steam into ECC play with five of their next six matches against league opponents.
Other non-conference matches will be against Dominican, Felician, Holy Family, West Chester and Saint Rose. Mercy will close out the regular season with seven straight ECC tilts, including home matches versus Adelphi on October 23 and NYIT on November 4, as they battle for a spot in the conference tournament from November 12-15.
"With six seasoned student-athletes returning that are looking to make their mark on their collegiate career and key recruits that will make an immediate impact, I'm looking forward to them raising their level of performance and making a run at a playoff spot," said Addison.
