Mercy College Women's Basketball Picks off Panthers 77-69

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The score was all knotted up at 69 with 1:19 remaining in the second half when the Mercy College women's basketball team went on an 8-0 run to close out the game against East Coast Conference (ECC) opponent Adelphi for a 77-69 victory on Wednesday.

Sophomore forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) hit a lay up to get the run started, followed by a steal by sophomore guard Ashley Borofsky (Southington, CT) who went coast-to-coast for the lay up for a 73-69 lead.

On the next Panthers (11-13, 8-7 ECC) possession it was Borofsky again who came up with the steal for the Blue & White. Senior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) and Reece each hit a pair of free throws to put the game out of reach.

Reece recorded a double-double with 19 points and tied a career-high with 24 rebounds. Baxter scored 20 points and added four assists. Sophomore forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) was 7-for-13 from the floor with 17 points.

The Mavericks (8-16, 5-10 ECC) began the contest with a 12-2 run, capped off with a lay up by Reece with 15:15 remaining. The Panthers responded with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to two (29-27). However, the Blue & White didn't relent, pushing the lead back up to 12 (39-27) with 3:30 remaining.

The Mavericks went into the break with a 43-35 lead.

The Panthers started the second half going on a 12-3 run, cutting the deficit down to one point with 15:00 remaining in the second half. After tying the score at 55, the visitors took the lead on a lay up by junior guard Keri Schumacher (East Northport, NY).

Mercy College came right back building a nine-point lead with eight consecutive points scored by Finnegan. The Panthers put up a 9-0 run of their own to knot the score at 69. The Mavericks ended the game by scoring the final eight points.

Sophomore forward Ashley Caiafa (Massapequa Park, NY) scored 13 points for the Panthers, while Schumacher added 12 points.

The Mavericks will be back in action when they travel to play Concordia on Saturday, February 21 at 1 p.m.
