Purple Knights Spoil Mavericks' Come Back Effort 74-61

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College women's basketball team was defeated by East Coast Conference (ECC) opponent Bridgeport by a score of 74-61 on Wednesday.

Senior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) led the Mavericks with 16 points and four assists. She is now one assist shy of tying the all-time record of 523 by Joyce LeNoir. Sophomore forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) tallied eight points on 4-of-8 shooting, while freshman guard Aimee Levine (Flushing, NY) added eight points.

The Purple Knights (11-15, 10-7 ECC) started the game with an 8-2 run, capped off with a three-pointer by junior forward Shannon Malone (Melbourne, Australia). The Mavericks (9-17, 6-11 ECC) came back to tie the score at eight after jumpers by Baxter, Levine, and Finnegan with 15:59 remaining.

The Blue & White took a 12-9 lead with two buckets by sophomore forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY). The Purple Knights regained the lead on a lay up by Malone, but once again the Mavericks responded with four straight points to take a three point advantage (20-17) with 9:25 remaining.

Bridgeport went on a 9-2 run to go up 26-22 and then extended its lead to 10 at the half with a 13-5 run. The Mavericks went into the break trailing 39-29.

The Purple Knights pushed its lead to 15 in the early moments of the first half after a jumper by senior forward Sandra Dziurdzia (Saarlouis, Germany). The Mavericks cut the lead to 53-43 after a lay up by Baxter with 11:28 remaining. However, the Purple Knights went on a 10-1 run to go up by 19 (63-44).

The Mavericks began its furious comeback with a 15-2 run, highlighted with a three-pointer by junior guard Samantha DeVore (Norwich, CT). Down by only six (65-59) with 1:22 remaining, the Purple Knights made their free throws down the stretch to foil any comeback hopes.

Malone finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds.

The Mavericks will finish off its home slate on Saturday, February 28 against NYIT at noon.
