Mercy College Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener to Bentley 76-54
LOWELL, MA
- The Mercy College women's basketball team was
defeated at the Valley Cup Tournament by Bentley University in its
season opener by a score of 76-54 on Saturday.
Sophomore forward Delmara Reece
(Yonkers,
NY) picked up where she left off
from last season and recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13
rebounds. Freshman guard Aimee Levine
(Glendale,
NY) had nine points, six rebounds
and three assists. Senior guard Christina Baxter
(Greenwood Lake,
NY) notched nine points, four
boards and three steals for the Mavericks.
Bentley (1-0) jumped out to an 8-2 lead after three-pointers by
Kristy McLean and Kim Brennan. The Falcons added two more on free
throws to extend their lead, but the Mavericks cut the deficit to
one, on two jumpers by Reece in the 7-0 run.
The Falcons came back down the floor and hit back-to-back
three-pointers to put the lead at seven points (16-9). The Falcons
were 8-for-19 from long range in the first half.
Bentley added to its lead, but Reece hit consecutive jumpers to
bring the lead back down to seven (23-16) with 6:36 remaining.
Brennan and Meghan Thomann hit shots from long range to go up by
15, but freshman forward Marquesha Moore (Bryans Road,
MD) connected on two lay ups with 2:54 remaining in the
first half. The Mavericks (0-1) went into the locker room trailing
38-26.
To start the second half the Mavericks got two buckets by sophomore
forward Ashley Borofsky
(Southington,
CT). After another three-pointer
by Brennan, Moore and freshman guard Simone Williams
(Waldorf, MD) hit lay ups to cut the deficit to seven
(43-37) with 15:55 remaining.
Brennan extended the lead to 14 with 11:07 remaining after she
dropped in a lay up. The Falcons went up by 16, but senior guard
Jazmin Steele
(Stoughton,
MA) connected on a
three-pointer.
However, Bentley increased its lead from there and came away with
the victory. Brennan finished with 22 points on 6-of-10 shooting,
including 4-of-5 from behind the arc.
The Falcons out rebounded the Mavericks 50 to 40.
The Mavericks will continue in the Valley Cup Tournament when they
take on UMass Lowell on Sunday at 3 p.m.
