DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 2, 2013) - The Mercy College women's lacrosse team opened up its 2013 season, under new Head Coach Dawn Anselmin, with a 12-7 triumph over Wilmington (Del.) University. Junior Kelsey Bub (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) scored three goals as Mercy moved to 1-0, while the Wildcats slipped to 0-3.
The Wildcats scored the game's first goal, before the Mavericks responded with four straight. The first two were netted by Bub, with the third and fourth coming off the stick of sophomore Marissa Kluber (Wading Rivers, N.Y.). The two teams traded goals as the first half came to an end, with Mercy leading 6-3.
The Wildcats mounted a comeback charge in the second half, scoring three goals to Mercy's one in the first three minutes. Wilmington trimmed its deficit to 7-6. However, the Mavericks found the scoring again, netting three unanswered to take a 10-6 lead with 6:26 left in regulation.
Wilmington was only able to muster up one more goal against Mercy senior goalie Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y.), and Bub and senior Marissa Hurley (Shirley, N.Y.) scored a goal each to secure the 12-7 victory.
For the Wildcats, Rebekah McCurry scored a hat trick, while Kaitlyn Hall made 12 saves in goal.
Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Massachusetts to take on American International College at 4:00 p.m.
