SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Mar. 6, 2013) - On Wednesday afternoon, the Mercy College women's lacrosse squad made the trek to Springfield, Mass. to square off against American International College. Behind four goals from junior Tracey Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and hat tricks from senior Marissa Hurley (Shirley, N.Y.) and junior Kelsey Bub (Cortland Manor, N.Y.), the Mavericks defeated the Yellowjackets, 13-8.
Although the final score doesn't show it, from the opening draw control, this contest was controlled by the Yellowjackets. AIC built up a 4-1 lead halfway through the first half. Then Mercy turned on the heat and reeled off five unanswered goals to take a 6-4 advantage at halftime. Wandle had the first two (within one minute of each other), which was followed by Hurley's first of the game. The last two of the first stanza were netted by sophomores Marissa Kluber (Wading River, N.Y.) and Michelle Tiernan (Farmingdale, N.Y.).
With 16 minutes left in the second half, Mercy held a 9-6 lead after AIC popped one to the back of the cage. However, just like before, the Mavericks blasted off an impressive streak and scored four straight times. Two AIC goals in the final 1:15 of the game wouldn't make a difference as Mercy took home the win, 13-8.
The Mavericks won eight of the game's 11 draw controls. In addition to her four goals, Wandle added two assists. Between the pipes, senior Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made seven saves.
Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks return to the field on Saturday, March 9 when they travel to the City of Brotherly Love and take on Chestnut Hill College. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
