DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 23, 2013) - On Saturday morning, the Mercy College women's lacrosse squad defeated Roberts Wesleyan College in East Coast Conference action, 17-10 at Mavericks Field. Sophomores Marissa Hurley (Wading River, N.Y.) and Michelle Tiernan (Farmingdale, N.Y.), and juniors Kelsey Bub (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) and Tracey Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y.) all had hat tricks for Mercy.
With the win, the Mavericks improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the ECC. Following the loss, the Redhawks dropped to 4-3 (0-1 ECC).
Mercy always had an answer for when Roberts Wesleyan scored. The Redhawks netted the contest's first goal, but the Mavericks responded with three goals. Then Roberts Wesleyan scored, which was answered by two Mercy goals. At the end of the first half, the Mavericks were doubling up their guests, 8-4.
Mercy never held a lead smaller than three goals for the entire second period. With 11:39 remaining, the Mavericks scored five goals to counter the Redhawks' two, to further cushion their advantage and take home the 17-10 victory.
In addition to four of the Mercy hat tricks, senior midfielder Kelsey Sullivan (Mastic, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist. In the cage, senior Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made three saves and earned the win.
For the Redhawks, Loren Dunn scored four times, while Alison Kendal and Ali Fox had two goals each. Between the pipes, Victoria Link had 14 saves.
Mercy won 21 of the game's 29 draw controls, while outshooting the Redhawks, 39-18.
Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks return to the field on Wednesday when they venture to Rockville Centre, Long Island to take on ECC-rival Molloy College. The opening draw control is slated for 7:00 p.m.
