ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Mar. 27, 2013) - On Wednesday night, the Mercy College women's lacrosse team ventured to Rockville Centre, Long Island to play East Coast Conference-rival Molloy College. The Lions upended the Mavericks, 12-9, as they improved to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the league. Mercy slipped to 5-2 on the season and 1-1 in the ECC.
Molloy jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the first 19 minutes of the contest. The Mavericks cut their opponents' lead in half in the ensuing minute and a half when freshman Nicole Kline (Deer Park, N.Y.) and junior Kelsey Bub (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) scored.
With 3:43 left, the Lions rolled off a 3-1 streak to take a 7-3 advantage heading into the intermission. That Mavericks' goal was netted by junior Tracey Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y.). Fellow junior Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) was responsible for the assist -- her second of the game.
Kicking off the second stanza, Znaniecki notched a goal of her own at the 25:56 mark. Sophomore Michelle Tiernan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) had the assist.
Whenever the Mavericks would inch closer to tying the score, the Lions were able to find an insurance goal. With 8:44 left, sophomore Keri Watson (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) recorded a goal to trim Molloy's lead to 10-7. However, the Lions fired in two straight markers to increase their lead to 12-7. Two more Mercy goals by Watson and senior Kelsey Sullivan (Mastic, N.Y.) wouldn't be enough as Molloy won, 12-9.
For the Mavericks, Watson and Bub each scored two goals, while Znaniecki finished with one tally and a pair of assists. In the cage, senior Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made 11 saves.
For the Lions, Codi Reiser, Kaitlynn Kelly and Nicole Mastrianni all had hat tricks, while Christie Roell netted two goals. Between the pipes, Caroline Winters had six saves.
Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks return to action next Wednesday, Apr. 3 when they host LIU Post at 4:00 p.m.
