DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 24, 2013) - On Wednesday, the Mercy College women's lacrosse team hosted St. Thomas Aquinas College on Senior Day. However, the Spartans defeated the Mavericks, 10-9 to improve to 11-3 overall and 3-3 in the East Coast Conference. The Mavericks slipped to 6-7 and 2-4 in the league.
Prior to the start of the game, Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the women's lacrosse squad honored its six graduating seniors -- Kelsey Sullivan (Mastic, N.Y.), Brittany Ott (Copiague, N.Y.), Julie Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y.), Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y.), Jamie McPartland (North Massapequa, N.Y.) and Marissa Hurley (Shirley, N.Y.).
STAC opened the game with the first goal to take a brief lead before the Mavericks scored twice off markers from junior Tracey Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and Darnulc.
At halftime, St. Thomas Aquinas led, 5-4.
The Spartans opened up the second half with three straight goals, before Mercy scored four times. Of those four goals, junior Kelsey Bub (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) had three of them, while fellow junior Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) had the other. Bub's third goal tied the game at 8-8 with 11:45 left.
Down 9-8 with 7:29 remaining in regulation, Wandle scored the equalizer on a free position shot.
With 14 seconds left before overtime, St. Thomas Aquinas converted on a free position goal to take a 13-12 lead, which would be the final outcome.
Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday to close out its 2013 season with a game at Bridgeport starting at 7:00 p.m.
