With the loss, the Mavericks
are 1-13 on the season, 0-3 in the conference.
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y.
– The Mercy College Volleyball team lost 3-0 (13-25,
25-27, 22-25) to NYIT on their home court on Thursday night,
despite a late scoring effort in sets two and three of the East
Coast Conference match.
With the loss, the Mavericks are 1-13
overall and 0-3 in the league. The NYIT Bears advance to 6-10 on
the season and 1-2 in the ECC.
The Mavericks were once again led by
junior middle hitter Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs,
Jamaica), who had 15 kills for Mercy College with a .344
attack percentage, her second-highest percentage this season. She
also led the team in service-aces with two. Hamilton tallied her
season-high attack percentage at Kutztown (Sept. 11) with a. 469.
Hamilton currently leads the Mavericks in both attack categories
with 138 kills this season, 3.07 kills per game, and an average
attack percentage of .270.
Rookie setter Rebecca Lynch
(Oceanside, N.Y.) had a team-high 18 assists for the
contest, while senior outside hitter Diana Bruzzone
(Guayaquil, Ecuador) had a team-high 17 digs. Bruzzone
also posted nine kills.
In the first set, NYIT got out to an
early lead and led 9-4 before went on a run and tied the set at 12.
After a Mercy College called time out, the Bears capitalized on
two-straight Maverick errors to turn the momentum of the game on
their side. NYIT went on a 13-1 point scoring run to win the set
25-13. NYIT sophomore Emily Syers (East Meadow, N.Y.) had six
assists in the run.
Mercy College came back in the second
set ready to play as the score was virtually tied the entire game.
Mid-game, NYIT's Tugce Sirdas (Istanbul, Turkey) scored
three-straight service aces to take a 15-11 lead over the
Mavericks. Hamilton stopped the run with an explosive kill set up
by senior Ashley Zufelt (Farmington, N.M.). Mercy
College was able to score once more before NYIT went on another
scoring run to take a 22-13 lead. With kills from Bruzzone,
Hamilton (3) and Lynch, in addition to NYIT errors, the Mavericks
jumped back into the game to close the gap on the Bears, to one
point. A kill by Bridgette Pennelle (Hawthorne,
N.Y.) would tie the game at 23-23. Trading points back and
forth, the Bears finally took the set off two Mercy errors, 27-25.
The third set went by much of the way
of the second, with the two conference foes tied neck-in-neck with
no more than two points making up the difference. In the final
serves of the set, NYIT won off a Mercy College error and kill from
Ali Falbo (Costa Mesa, Calif.)
Up next, the Mavericks will look to
rebound from their loss with a tri-match on Saturday, Oct. 3 at
West Chester University in West Chester, Pa. Mercy College will
play host school West Chester at 3 p.m. The Mavericks return home
on Monday, Oct. 5 to defend their home court against the Felician
College Golden Falcons.
