Mavericks Edged by Dowling, 2-1
BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. - An early second half goal by
Harald Gundhus stood as the game-winner as host Dowling held on for
a 2-1 decision over Mercy College in East Coast Conference (ECC)
men's soccer on Saturday. The Mavericks are now 2-7 overall and 0-3
in ECC play.
The Golden Lions (8-3, 3-0 ECC) wasted no time getting on the
scoreboard as Michael Nicolini scored on a feed from Ajani Jones
just 2:36 into the contest.
Dowling held the one goal lead until the 42nd minute when
Raldino Powell (Bronx, N.Y.) connected on a header
to the upper right off of a corner kick from Marko Loncar
(Pleasantville, N.Y.) to even the score at 1-1 for Mercy.
After the break, the two squads played even until Gundhus
converted a free kick at the 58:08 mark from 20 yards out into the
top left corner and gave the Golden Lions a 2-1 edge they would not
relinquish.
Dowling out-shot Mercy 24-9, but Mavericks' goalkeeper
Martin Walsh (Dublin, Ireland) made nine saves.
Chris Kucera stopped three shots for the Golden Lions.
The Mavericks return to action on Wednesday, October 14, when
they host St. Thomas Aquinas at 3 p.m.
