Mavericks Women's Soccer Posts 3-0 Shutout Over Spartans

Mercy College junior Delmara Reece sinks two more goals to her season tally.

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The Mercy College women's soccer team notched three-straight home victories with a 3-0 East Coast Conference shut out over St. Thomas Aquinas College Tuesday afternoon on Mercy College Field. Junior forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, N.Y.) once again sunk two goals in the win, to help the Mavericks to their first league win of the season.

With the win, the Mavericks advanced to 3-5-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the ECC. The Spartans fell to 3-10-0 on the season and 0-6-0 in the conference.

Both of Reece's goals were unassisted.

The Mavericks and Spartans were scoreless in the first half despite Mercy College's seven shots to St. Thomas Aquinas' four. Coming back from the break, Reece scored in the 48th minute of play unassisted to break the 0-0 tie.

In the 59th minute, Reece netted her sixth goal of the season for her second-straight multi-goal game as she broke to the goal from the right corner, beat out Spartan goalkeeper Jeanette Gibson for the corner and scored.

The Mavericks netted their safety goal in the 79th minute of play as Reece and senior Ann Meenagh (Dublin, Ireland) broke through the midfield beat out three Spartan defenders and went two-on-two with the last defender and Gibson. Meenagh got away from the defender and broke away for a one-on-one with the goalkeeper and took a shot from about 15 yards away. Meenagh's shot was good for her third goal of the season.

Mercy College goalkeeper, rookie Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y.) tallied her second shut out of the season. DiLegge made six saves in the net for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 17 for a road contest with ECC-foe NYIT. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. against the Bears of Brookville, N.Y.
