Soccer Mavericks Hold Spartans To A
One-Goal Shut Out
Mercy College men's soccer team nets first ECC win
of the season.
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y.
– The Mercy College men's soccer team posted
its first East Coast Conference win on Wednesday afternoon with a
one-goal shut out victory over the visiting St. Thomas Aquinas
Spartans. With the win, the Mavericks advance to 3-7-0 overall and
1-3-0 in the league. The Spartans are 4-7-1 overall and share the
same conference record as the Mavericks.
Junior forward/midfielder
Artiz Artoni (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored the
game-winner for Mercy College in the 70th minute of play. Receiving
the ball from Ben Latchford (Solihull, England)
and Marko Loncar (Pleasantville, N.Y.) who guided
the ball with one-touch passes from the sideline; Artoni
bicycle-kicked the ball backwards into the top right corner of the
net for the 1-0 Maverick lead.
The two squads were scoreless in the
first half with Maverick goaltender Martin Walsh (Dublin,
Ireland) with three saves. Walsh was tremendous in the
goal for Mercy College with nine total saves, tying his season best
effort.
Despite 20 Spartan shots, St. Thomas
Aquinas remained scoreless.
The Mavericks are back in action on
Tuesday, Oct. 20 for another home East Coast Conference match up.
Mercy College will host Bridgeport at 3 p.m. on Mercy College
Field.
