Mavericks Lose Close Match To Dowling, 3-1

Mavericks' Dig Pink.

Mercy College raised more than $700 for the Side-Out Foundation at the ECC Dig Pink event.

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The score in the Mercy College Mavericks Volleyball match to Dowling may have been 3-1 (18-25, 22-25, 25-18, 21-25) in favor of the Golden Knights, but the Mavericks were the real winners as they raised more than $700 for the Side-Out Foundation in their Dig Pink match, Tuesday night at Mercy College Gym.

With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 3-20 overall and 0-8 in the conference while Dowling extends its record to 20-5, 7-1 in the league.

Through a $2 door donation table, in-game raffle, team table in the cafeteria and individual pledge fundraising efforts, the Mavericks' volleyball team was able to raise $714 by the end of Tuesday's match. Fundraising through the East Coast Conference's Dig Pink to benefit the Side-Out Foundation continues through Oct. 24. Individuals can donate online through the East Coasts Conference's team page at: https://www.side-out.org/application/teams/team_page/2066. The total funds raised for the cause will be announced at the ECC Volleyball Championships on Saturday, Nov. 14. The Mavericks will continue to collect until the end of the week. Mercy College tallied 56 digs against the Dowling Golden Lions on Tuesday night, for those who donated per dig.

In the match, Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica) led the team in kills with 16, tallying three blocks and three service aces. Rebecca Lynch (Oceanside, N.Y.) had 23 assists. Diane Bruzzone (Guayaquil, Ecuador) helped the Mavericks to their 56 digs with 17 of her own, eight kills and one block.

In the first set, the Mavericks rallied back from a 20-9 deficit. With six straight points, Mercy College looked like it had stopped the Dowling scoring streak. But it was too little, too late as the Golden Lions finished set with a kill by Bethany Shepard to finish 25-18.

The second set had a different look as the Mavericks were hungry to score and win. Mercy College took the lead early with Dowling staying a close one-point behind. Neck-and-neck and tied at 20, Dowling broke the Mercy streak to take its first lead of the set, 21-20. The Mavericks came back with a kill by Bruzzone and an error by Dowling to take a one-point lead 22-21. Shepard marked another kill for the Golden Lions to tie the score at 22. With two straight Dowling errors and an ace by Kassandra Phillips (Marcellus, N.Y.) the Mavericks were able to tie the match at one a piece.

After the set break, the Golden Lions came roaring back and took the early lead in both sets three and four. The Mavericks played catch up in both games but were not able to come from behind to win.

The Mavericks will take to the road next for a non-conference match up at Chestnut Hill on Thursday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Ann Rusnack Sorgenti Arena in Philadelphia.
