Women's Soccer Mavericks Post
3-2 Victory Over Deacons
Mercy College junior Delmara
Reece nets two in the home win.
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y.
– The Mercy College women's soccer team posted
their second-consecutive home victory with a 3-2 win over visiting
Bloomfield College on Monday afternoon at Mercy College Field.
Junior Delmara Reece (Yonkers, N.Y.) scored two
goals in the Mavericks win to tally four goals in just three games
played this season.
With the non-conference win, the
Mavericks advance to 2-5-0 overall. The Deacons fall to 2-9-0 on
their season.
Reece scored in the first two minutes
of play off a Maverick corner kick from the right side. Fellow
junior Andrea Nash (Somers, N.Y.) assisted Reece
with a one-time pass from the corner kick to Reece in front of the
goal.
The Deacons tied it up at the end of
the 19th minute of play with a tight goal around Maverick
goalkeeper rookie Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore,
N.Y.). Sophomore Christine Rutherford (North Arlington,
N.J.) slipped the ball behind the right post past DiLegge to tie
the game at one a piece. Freshman Michelle Cadena (Clifton, N.J.)
assisted the goal.
DiLegge kept the Mavericks in the game
by making a diving save in the 20th minute of play to save a shot
from freshman Stacey Jones (Mount Sheridan, Australia). Jones
caught the rebound off a shot from Rutherford that was deflected
off the cross bar at the opposite post. It looked as though DiLegge
would be caught at the left-side post, but just in time she
sprinted back to the right-side post to stop a second Deacon goal
and clear the ball out of the Mavericks' zone.
With just seven minutes left in the
first half, junior Diane Ralyea (McGraw, N.Y.)
gave Mercy College the one-goal advantage as once again the
Mavericks scored off a corner kick. Nash, leading the ball to
assist Ralyea, helped center the ball as Ralyea took the pass to
score in the 38th minute of play.
Mercy College went into halftime up
2-1.
Coming in off the break, Reece helped
the Mavericks take a 3-1 advantage over Bloomfield College as her
shot was deflected and redirected into the Deacon net by one of the
Bloomfield defenders. Reece's shot went over the top of
Bloomfield's goalkeeper, freshman Adriana Moreno (Harrison,
N.J.) in the 50th minute of play.
Bloomfield came right back with a goal
by Jones, assisted by sophomore Shawna Reynolds (Lyndhurst, N.J.)
in the 55th minute of play to cut Mercy College's lead to
3-2.
The Mavericks sealed the deal on the
win as DiLegge made five saves in goal for Mercy College.
Next up, the Mercy College
women's soccer team will look to extend its home-winning
streak to three as they host St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday, Oct. 13
in an East Coast Conference match up. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
on Mercy College Field.
