Mavericks Defeat Golden Falcons, 3-2,
In Home Victory
Three Mercy College
women's volleyball players tally in double-figures.
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y.
– The Mercy College women's volleyball team
tallied its second notch in the win column with an exciting 3-2
(16-25, 25-15, 25-21, 22-25, 15-10) victory over the Felician
Golden Falcons, Monday night at Mercy College Gymnasium. Three
Maverick players posted double-doubles in the win, freshman
Rebecca Lynch (Oceanside, N.Y.), senior
Ashley Zufelt (Farmington, N.M) and junior
Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica).
With the non-conference win, the
Mavericks advance to 2-14 on the season, while the Golden Falcons
fall to 3-13 overall.
For the sixth-consecutive time this
season, Hamilton led the team in kills with 20. She also added 17
digs for the double-double and two service aces. Rookie Lynch aided
49 points in the match, also adding 12 digs and one ace. Zufelt
tallied a team second-best 11 kills while also having 11 digs on
defense.
Senior Diana Bruzzone
(Guayaquil, Ecuador) had a solid overall match for the
Mavericks with 18 digs, five kills, three aces and three block
assists.
Mercy College senior Sasha
Atkins (Bronx, N.Y.), was a wall at the net with five
total blocks, three block assists and two solo. Atkins also had six
kills and two digs. Rookie Kassandra Phillips (Marcellus,
N.Y.) also had a solo block, four digs and six kills.
In the first set, Felician came out
ready to play and took and early lead and led the whole time to a
25-16 victory. In the second, Mercy College was prepared. After
going point-for-point, the Mavericks and took an easy lead over the
Golden Falcons with back-to-back kills by Atkins and Bruzzone,
followed by three aces from Brozzone to take a 14-8 lead. The
Mavericks never looked back as they easily sealed the deal on a
25-15 win.
The third set started off the best in
Mercy College's favor as they jumped ahead 10-6. The
Mavericks led 20-14 before the Golden Falcons started chipping back
to tie the set at 20. Two-straight Felician errors gave Mercy
College the 22-20 go ahead before a failed serve by Lynch. A
kill-ace-kill from Hamilton gave Mercy College the 3-1 advantage in
the match, 25-21.
Felician came back in the fourth set
and still the score wavered within five points. With the score
20-23 in favor of Felician, Mercy College fought back to get two
more points before the Golden Falcons scored the final two winning
points.
Down 4-0 in the final set, Mercy
College fought back to tie the score at 10-10 with a kill by
Bruzzone. After a Felician-called time out, two kills from
Hamilton, and three errors from Felician gave the Mavericks their
second victory of the season.
The Mercy College volleyball team is
back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 6 as they look to defend their home
court and win two-in-a-row. The Mavericks will host Bridgeport at 7
p.m. in the Mercy College Gymnasium.
