Ferney Forero scores
season-fist goal in conference loss.
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y.
– The Mercy College men's soccer team lost 4-2
in East Coast Conference action to Molloy on Mercy College Field on
Tuesday. Maverick rookie Ferney Forero (Ossining,
N.Y.) scored his season-first goal in the contest. With
the loss, the Mavericks fall to 2-6-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the
league. Molloy advances to 4-5-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the ECC.
Molloy's senior Jose Batista
(Rego Park, N.Y.) scored all four goals for the Lions. Batista
scored his first goal for Molloy in the 15th minute of play with an
assist from fellow senior John Paul-Hughes (Manchester, England).
Paul-Hughes and Batista beat out Maverick goalkeeper sophomore
Martin Walsh (Dublin, Ireland) on the right post
before Batista sent his shot to the top left corner of the goal.
Forero tied it up at 15:41 as he
scored from 20-yards in front of the Molloy goal after a fast-break
from Mercy.
Molloy's Batista scored
three-unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead at the 29th minute of
play.
Mercy College midfielder
Vjekoslav Lubric (Pleasantville, N.Y.) scored in
the 42nd minute for the Mavericks as he took a one-time shot passed
off from Hugo Bernal (Guadalajara, Mexico) who had
taken a quick pass from Ekram Ozer (Istanbul,
Turkey).
Mercy College went into the halftime
break down 4-2, and despite beating the Lions in shots 12-5 in the
second half, remained scoreless the rest of the game.
Walsh had six saves in the net for the
Mavericks, including a penalty kick by Batista late in the second
period. Lubric led the team in shots with five. Carlos Barros
(Mineola, N.Y.) was tremendous in the goal for Molloy with 10
saves, including two penalty kicks.
Up next, the Mavericks will look to
rebound from their Lion loss wit a game another conference game at
Dowling on October 10. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
