Late-Match Rally Falls Three Points
Short In Mavericks 3-2 Loss To Pioneers
Shedeiky Hamilton tallied 19
kills in the five-set ECC match.
BROOKVILLE, N.Y.
– Despite a late-match rally to win sets three and
four, the Mercy College women's volleyball team fell just
three-points short in the final set as C.W. Post took the 3-2 win
(21-25, 8-25, 27-25, 25-17, 12-15) in East Coast Conference action
on Thursday night at the Pratt Center.
With the loss, the Mavericks fall to
2-16 on the season and 0-5 in league play. The Pioneers advance to
9-8 overall and 5-1 in the ECC.
Junior Shedeiky Hamilton
(Yallahs, Jamaica) once again led the team in kills with a
second-best season total of 19. Hamilton tallied her third
double-double of the week with 13 digs as well. The junior posted
five blocks at the net with three solo efforts and two assisted
blocks. Freshman setter Rebecca Lynch (Oceanside,
N.Y.) added 34 assists and seven digs. Senior outside
hitter Diana Bruzzone (Guayaquil, Ecuador) set a
team-high in digs with 17. She also had the second-best kill tally
with seven.
In the first set, Mercy College
rallied back with five-straight points to bring the score from
14-21 to 19-21. Three kills from C.W. Post's Kirsten Taylor
(South Pasadena, Calif.) sealed the deal on the Pioneer win. With
only two kills in the second set, Mercy College let the Pioneers
take a 20-7 lead en route to a 25-8 loss. The Mavericks came out
strong in the third set, jumping out to a 16-8 lead. The lead was
enough of a buffer for Mercy College as the Pioneers fought back
and set the set into extra points. C.W. Post took the 25-24 lead
when a kill from Hamilton tied the score and two C.W. Post errors
gave the Mavericks a win, keeping them alive in the match.
In the fourth set, Mercy College came
out even stronger, taking a huge 15-3 lead that helped lead them
into a 25-17 win.
In the final set, the score was tied
five times with the score never varying farther than three points.
With the Pioneers up 13-10, Mercy College brought the game within
one, 13-12, off a Pioneer bad set and a kill from Bruzzone. C.W.
Post closed out the game with two-straight kills to win the match
3-2.
The Mavericks will take to the road
again on Saturday when they travel to Wilmington, Del., for a
tri-match against Felician University for the third time this
season and Wilmington University. First match starts at 2 p.m. on
Saturday against Felician.
