Mavericks Volleyball Edged By NYIT,
3-2, At Kutztown Challenge
KUTZTOWN, Pa. –
The Mercy College Mavericks drew out their first match of the
Kutztown Volleyball Challenge to five closely-contested games but
were edged out by their ECC foes, the NYIT Bears, 2-3 (25-16,
25-21, 25-20, 25-19, 15-11), at Keystone Arena on Friday night.
Friday's contest was the first
of three meetings between the two conference opponents. With the
loss, Mercy is 0-3 on the season, while NYIT advances to 3-2.
Offensively, Maverick junior
Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica) led Mercy
with 16 kills, while senior outside hitter Diana Bruzzone
(Guayaquil, Ecuador) added 10 kills of her own.
Mercy sophomore Bridgette
Pennelle (Hawthorne, N.Y.) had 34 assists over the five
games, aided by Bruzzone and freshman Kassandra Phillips
(Marcellus, N.Y.) with one each, while senior
Ashley Zufelt (Farmington, N.M.) tallied two.
The Mavericks had a total of nine
service aces in the five-game match, with Phillips leading the way
with three. Pennelle and Zufelt had two each.
Phillips led the way defensively as
well with seven digs. Hamilton got her hand on five blocks at the
net, including two solo efforts.
The Mavericks will continue their run
at the Kutztown Volleyball Challenge on Saturday, as they play
tournament host, Kutztown at 10 a.m. followed by a match against
Felician at 2:30 p.m.
