Victory At Nyack
Mavericks tally
second-straight win of the season.
NYACK, N.Y. –
The Mercy College men's soccer team posted its
second-straight victory with a 3-1 win over the Nyack College
Warriors on Tuesday night at Moseley Field. Leading the way for the
Mavericks was midfielder Vjekoslav Lubric (Pleasantville,
N.Y.), who tallied a goal and an assist in the two-goal
victory.
With the win, the Mercy is 2-2 on the
season, while Nyack fell to 1-4 overall.
The Mavericks got on the board first
with just their third shot of the contest, while Nyack sent six
shots at the Mercy goal and remained scoreless. Lubric scored in
the 27th minute with help from sophomore forward Mike
Fernandes (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.). Fernandes took control of
the ball with a run down the wing around Nyack keeper Adrian Ibanez
(Toronto, Canada). The sophomore was able to get the ball through
past the goaltender when Lubric came in to finish the job to put
the Mavericks up 1-0.
Mercy went into the halftime break
with a one-goal advantage.
Starting the second half, Nyack
capitalized off a Maverick foul to even the score at 1-1 with a
penalty kick goal from Daniel Ocampo (Mexico City,
Mexico) at 49:26.
Mercy turned right around to answer
back at 57:18 with a goal from junior forward Artiz Artoni
(Sao Paolo, Brazil), assisted by Lubric. Lubric carried
the ball 30 yards through the middle of the field and slipped it
through to Artoni. Artoni topped it off with a strong finish at the
nearside post to once again give the Mavericks a one-goal lead.
Maverick sophomore Hugo Bernal
(Guadalajara, Mexico) gave Mercy the safety goal with just
under 15 minutes left in regulative. Rushing past the Nyack
defense, Bernal took the ball down the right side of the field into
the penalty area and scored with an open shot to the near post side
go ahead 3-1 over the Warriors in the 75th minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper Martin
Walsh (Dublin, Ireland) had five saves in the goal for
Mercy. He was helped by fellow classmate and Dublin native
Keith Dillon who shut down the Nyack offense.
“Dillion really had a great day
at the center defense position today,” remarked Mercy
men's soccer head coach Nicholas Bell.
“He had a very strong performance that helped us a
lot.”
Nyack had 14 shots to Mercy's
seven but was only able to score on one. Nyack also led in corner
kicks 5-1. The Mavericks led the Warriors in fouls 18-14.
The Mercy men's soccer team
returns to the road again on Friday, Sept. 18 for an away contest
at Lock Haven University. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Huber Jack
Stadium in Lock Haven, Pa.
