Mercy Men's Soccer Loses 5-1 To NYIT

 

Artiz Artoni nets Mavericks' lone goal.

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Mercy College men's soccer team lost 5-1 at the hands of conference foe, NYIT, Sunday afternoon. The loss was the first East Coast Conference loss for the Mavericks who fall to 2-4 on the season and 0-1 in the league.

NYIT (4-5, 1-1 ECC) scored first at 6:43 with a goal from Felipe Santos.

The Mavericks tied it up ten minutes later with a goal from junior Artiz Artoni (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Sophomore forward Ben Latchford (Solihull, England) assisted Artoni's goal as Artoni got a foot on a loose ball coming in from a corner kick.

The teams kept it tied for the rest of the half.

The Bears came back in the second half with four unanswered goals, despite five total shots from Vjekoslav Lubric (Pleasantville, N.Y.).

Mercy goalkeeper Martin Walsh (Dublin, Ireland) had four saves in the net for the Mavericks.

Next up, the Mavericks will face nationally ranked No. 14 Dominican College Chargers in Orangeburg, N.Y., on Tuesday. Game time starts at 7 p.m.
