Two Mavericks Tally Double-Doubles In 3-1 Loss To St. Rose
Seniors Diana Bruzzone and junior Shedeiky Hamilton post
double-doubles in kills and digs.
ALBANY, N.Y. – The Mercy College
women's volleyball team lost 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 15-25,
24-26), in a grudge-match at the College of St. Rose on Tuesday.
Mercy College (1-12, 0-1) junior Shedeiky Hamilton
(Yallahs, Jamaica) once again led the team offensively
with 14 points off 12 kills, one service ace, and a solo block. She
also added 10 digs for her third-straight double-double.
Senior Diana Bruzzone (Guayaquil, Ecuador) had
the team's second highest point total with 11.5, also
tallying a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs. Bruzzone also
got her hand on a showdown at the net for one block assist.
Rookie Rebecca Lynch (Oceanside, N.Y.) was the
lone setter for Mercy as she assisted 33 Mercy points.
Mercy College came back in the first set as the Golden
Knights (10-5) led 15-8 in their largest margin. A kill from
Hamilton and two-straight errors by St. Rose got the Mavericks back
in it and Mercy College slowly chipped away at the home
team's lead to come within three 20-17. The Mavericks could
not overcome errors made in the first part of the set as St. Rose
sealed the deal on the win, 25-21.
In the second set, St. Rose took an early 4-1 lead before Mercy
College capitalized on the Golden Knights errors and tied the set
at 9-9 off a service ace from Ashley Zufelt (Farmington,
N.M.). Sasha Atkins (Bronx, N.Y.) helped Mercy College
take the lead with a kill assisted by Lynch 10-9. The Mavericks
held onto the lead until St. Rose tied it up at 17-17 with a kill
by Sarah Kahrs. Four-straight errors by the Golden Knights would
give the Mavericks back the lead and the momentum as they were able
to finish off the game with a win, 25-22.
The third set was controlled by St. Rose, despite a late-set
rally by the Mavericks to score. In the fourth set, Mercy College
was able to come back from a seven-point, 22-15 deficit to tie the
set in the final serves, 24-24, with a kill by Hamilton. With a
Maverick service error and a St. Rose kill, the set was won by the
Golden Knights in a dramatic overtime finish 26-24.
Next up for the Mercy College Mavericks is their second home
match of the season, when they face off against the NYIT Bears,
Thursday, Oct. 1 in the Mercy College Gymnasium. First serve is
scheduled for 7 p.m.
