Stonehill Outscores Mercy College Men's Soccer 6-3

Ben Latchford

EASTON, Mass. - Sophomore Ben Latchford (Solihull, England) scored a pair of goals, but host Stonehill College ran off five straight tallies before posting a 6-3 decision over Mercy College in non-conference men's soccer action on Friday.

Mercy (0-2) got both of Latchford's goals less than two minutes apart mid-way through the first frame. Junior Raldino Powell (Yonkers, N.Y.) assisted on one and grad student Vjekoslav Lubric (Pleasantville, N.Y.) assisted on the other.

Stonehill (3-0) answered with a goal from freshman Anthony Campagnano (Schenectady, N.Y.) just before the break. He then knotted the game at 2-2 just 8:15 into the second half and gave the Skyhawks their first lead with his third tally of the contest in the 64th minute.

Senior Shaun Keeley (Woburn, Mass.) gave Stonehill a 4-2 advantage in the 69th minute, but neither team was done scoring yet. After sophomore Mark Bolster (Narragansett, R.I.) made it 5-2 for the Skyhawks in the 86th minute, Mercy junior Hugo Bernal (Guadalajara, Mexico) cut the deficit to 5-3 just over a minute later on a header. Sophomore Kevin Conti (Cohoes, N.Y.) got it back for Stonehill in the closing seconds.

Junior goalkeeper Brandon McFarlane (Norwich, Conn.) made two saves in goal for Stonehill. Sophomore Martin Walsh (Dublin, Ireland) finished with four saves for the Mavericks.

Mercy College will return to action on Wednesday, September 9, when it hosts Concordia at 4 p.m.
