Stonehill Outscores Mercy College Men's Soccer 6-3
EASTON, Mass.
- Sophomore Ben Latchford
(Solihull,
England) scored a pair of goals,
but host Stonehill College ran off five straight tallies before
posting a 6-3 decision over Mercy College in non-conference men's
soccer action on Friday.
Mercy (0-2) got both of Latchford's goals less than two minutes
apart mid-way through the first frame. Junior Raldino
Powell (Yonkers,
N.Y.) assisted on one and grad
student Vjekoslav Lubric
(Pleasantville,
N.Y.) assisted on the other.
Stonehill (3-0) answered with a goal from freshman
Anthony Campagnano
(Schenectady,
N.Y.) just before the break. He
then knotted the game at 2-2 just 8:15 into the second half and
gave the Skyhawks their first lead with his third tally of the
contest in the 64th minute.
Senior Shaun Keeley
(Woburn,
Mass.) gave Stonehill a 4-2
advantage in the 69th minute, but neither team was done scoring
yet. After sophomore Mark Bolster (Narragansett,
R.I.) made it 5-2 for the Skyhawks in the 86th minute,
Mercy junior Hugo Bernal (Guadalajara, Mexico) cut
the deficit to 5-3 just over a minute later on a header. Sophomore
Kevin Conti
(Cohoes,
N.Y.) got it back for Stonehill
in the closing seconds.
Junior goalkeeper Brandon McFarlane
(Norwich,
Conn.) made two saves in goal for
Stonehill. Sophomore Martin Walsh
(Dublin,
Ireland) finished with four saves
for the Mavericks.
Mercy College will return to action on Wednesday, September 9,
when it hosts Concordia at 4 p.m.
