Women's Basketball Falls to Molloy in ECC Action
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- The Mercy College women's basketball
team lost a 62-46 decision to Molloy College today at the Mercy
College Gym. With the loss, Mercy falls to 4-15 (3-19 East Coast
Conference), while Molloy improves to 12-7 (9-4 ECC).
Mercy got off to a hot start, and took an early 7-4 lead. The game
remained tight, as Molloy managed to tie the game at 10 point
apiece. Delmara Reece
(Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) hit a jumper with 8:51 to go
in the first half to put the Mavericks back on top at 12-10.
Point guard Simone
Willliams (Waldorf, Md./Waldorf) picked up her third
foul shortly thereafter, and the momentum Mercy had built slowed.
Molloy reeled off a 7-0 run, only to have Janelle Dunham
(Bear, Del./Caravel) stop that streak with a
conventional three-point play with 5:53 to play. Undeterred, Molloy
headed on another 7-0 run, this time to end the half, and took a
24-15 lead into the break. Leading the charge for the Lions through
the first 20 minutes was E.J. Dryer (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop
Molloy), who scored 12 of her game-high 21 points in the first
half.
"We just don't have a lot of depth," Head Coach Kelli Dunlay
stated. "When Simone was forced to sit [due to foul trouble], that
was a real turning point in the game."
After the break, Mercy would cut the lead back to single digits at
26-17 on an Ann Butehorn
(Farmingdale, N.Y./ Farmingdale) basket. But the
Mavericks would get no closer, as Molloy eventually extended the
lead to as many as 31, and took the 62-46 final.
Leading the charge for Mercy was Ashley Borofsky
(Southington, Conn./Southington), who scored 13
points, while Butehorn contributed 10. Reece finished with nine
points and 10 rebounds.
For Molloy, ten players contributed points. Dreyer added 10
rebounds to her 21 points to lead the Lions.
With the loss, Mercy remains in seventh place in the ECC, just one
game behind Queens College. QC plays at Bridgeport today.
Mercy now embarks on a three-game road trip, and will play at NYIT
on Wednesday, February 3. That game is slated for a 5:00 p.m. tip.
