Mavericks Volleyball Drops Matches to Adelphi and Assumption

Box Score 2 The Mercy volleyball team dropped both ends of a tri-match today
in Worcester, Mass., falling to Adelphi University and Assumption
College, both by 3-0 scores. Mercy is now 3-16 on the season.
In the first match of the day, against Adelphi, the Panthers
cruised through the first two sets, hitting .321 and .375, but
Mercy rallied in the third, threatening to push Adelphi to a fourth
set.
In the third, Mercy came out strong, moving out to a 7-3 lead.
Mercy would extend the lead to 18-12 and still led late in the
game, 23-18. But, two straight Mercy attack errors allowed Adelphi
back into the game at 23-20. A Syntia Malicka (Krakow, Poland/Southington
(Conn.)) kill put Mercy one point from victory, at
24-20. From there Adelphi turned it up, producing five straight
kills and a service ace to claim the victory. For the match,
sophomore Kassy Phillips (Marcellus,
N.Y./Marcellus) led the Mavericks with eleven kills
and a .526 hitting percentage. Classmate Rebecca Lynch (Oceanside,
N.Y./Oceanside) recorded 23 set assists, while senior
libero Mirlusca Montes (Lima, Peru/Senor de la
Misericordia) had 14 digs.
In the day's second match, against the host Greyhouds, the
Mavericks lost 25-21, 25-14, 25-21. Junior Bridgette Pennelle (Hawthorne,
N.Y./Westlake) had seven kills and eight digs, while
Lynch added 17 assists and seven digs.
The Mavericks return to East Coast Conference action on Tuesday,
travelling to Queens College on Tuesday, October 12, at 7:00
p.m.
