The Mercy College volleyball battled but dropped a close 3-0 match at Queens College on Tuesday evening. Set scores were 25-21, 25-22, 25-13.

In the first set, Mercy (3-17, 0-5 East Coast Conference) went on a 6-0 run to take a 20-15 lead on a pair of kills by freshman Nicole Pepe (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) and a pair of service aces by sophomore Rebecca Lynch (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside). Yet the hosts would not yield, and responded with an 8-0 run of their own, and eventually won 25-21.

Set two saw Mercy go on a 6-1 run early on to take a slight 11-9 lead. The match remained tight, and was tied at 18. A 4-1 run for the Knights gave Queens (5-11, 2-3 ECC) the commanding lead, a lead they would not relinquish.

The third and final set saw an unprecedented 13-1 run for Queens as they took a 17-5 lead. Later, with sophomore Kassy Phillips (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) serving, the Mavericks rallied with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 19-11, but would get no closer.

Mercy returns to action on Thursday, October 14, hosting Molloy College in the Mercy College Gym at  7:00 p.m.
