Mavericks Volleyball Battle Queens in 3-0 Loss
Box Score The Mercy College volleyball battled but dropped a close 3-0
match at Queens College on Tuesday evening. Set scores were 25-21,
25-22, 25-13.
In the first set, Mercy (3-17, 0-5 East Coast Conference) went
on a 6-0 run to take a 20-15 lead on a pair of kills by freshman Nicole Pepe (East Meadow, N.Y./East
Meadow) and a pair of service aces by sophomore Rebecca Lynch (Oceanside,
N.Y./Oceanside). Yet the hosts would not yield, and
responded with an 8-0 run of their own, and eventually won
25-21.
Set two saw Mercy go on a 6-1 run early on to take a slight 11-9
lead. The match remained tight, and was tied at 18. A 4-1 run for
the Knights gave Queens (5-11, 2-3 ECC) the commanding lead, a lead
they would not relinquish.
The third and final set saw an unprecedented 13-1 run for Queens
as they took a 17-5 lead. Later, with sophomore Kassy Phillips (Marcellus,
N.Y./Marcellus) serving, the Mavericks rallied with a
5-0 run to cut the lead to 19-11, but would get no closer.
Mercy returns to action on Thursday, October 14, hosting Molloy
College in the Mercy College Gym at 7:00 p.m.
