Men's Soccer Beats CW Post in Double OT on Alex Cruz Game-Winner
Box Score Junior Alex Cruz (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern)
scored the game-winning goal midway through the second overtime, as
the Mercy College men's soccer team defeated C.W. Post today
2-1. With the win, the Mavericks climb to 6-6-2, including
1-5 in the East Coast Conference, and the Pioneers drop to 6-7-1,
including 2-3 in the ECC.
For Cruz, it was his second game-winner of the season.
In the first half, C.W. Post's Betim Bajrami scored his
team's lone goal at the 25:52 mark.
In the second half, the Mavericks took charge. Junior Collin
Legge (Schodack, N.Y./Maple Hill) brought the ball up
field and passed it to Marko
Loncar (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville), who set up
Alex Cruz for the one touch goal at the 67:23
mark. The score would stand through regulation time, and the
first overtime period.
In the second overtime, Legge played the ball long, and
Cruz beat the goalkeeper one-on-one for the game
winner. Cruz's two goals today bring his season tally
to four.
In goal, Pedro Velazquez-Diaz (Walden, N.Y/Newberry
College) had seven saves on the day.
Prior to today's game, the Mavericks honored six
student-athletes on Senior Day. They were Hugo
Bernal (Guadalajara, Mexico/Irvington), Michael Fernandes (Mt. Vernon, N.Y./Blessed
Sacrament), Loncar, Earl
Pomills, Jr., (Bridgeport, Conn./Kolbe Cathedral),
Raldino Powell (Bronx, N.Y./Garvey Maceo
(Jamaica)), and Velazquez-Diaz.
Mercy's next game is on Oct. 27, when the Mavericks host
Dominican College in the final home game of the season.
