The first set was hotly contested early on. NYIT held an early
lead, only to have Nicolette Gebhardt (Middletown, N.Y./Pine
Bush) smack down a kill to cut the score to 6-3. Play
continued back and forth, with a 3-0 run for Mercy during the
service of Marissa
Hurley (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) keeping the match
tight. The Mavericks cut the lead to 14-12, only to have NYIT go on
a 6-0 run, led by three straight aces by Tech's Sarah
Stein to take a commanding 21-12 lead. The Bears would go on to
take the set 25-14.
Set number two saw more competitive action. With the score
tied 4-4, Gebhardt again set the tone, knocking down a thunderous
kill as the Mavericks held the slimmest of all leads. Mercy would
hold the lead until 9-8, when a hitting error by Syntia
Malicka (Krakow, Poland/Southington,(Conn.)) returned
the lead to the Bears. The Bears got hot and reeled off a 9-1 run,
and held the lead for the 25-17.
Mercy got out to a 5-2 lead to start the third set only to have
NYIT fight back and take a 11-5 lead. But the Mavericks would not
go quietly. Sophomore Rebecca
Lynch (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) took over service,
and Mercy reeled off three points to cut the deficit to 13-11. NYIT
responded as Nina Cicero had a kill to reestablish momentum for the
visitors. The Bears would go on for the 25-18 victory.
For the match, Mercy was led by Lynch, who had three kills and
eight digs, and Gebhardt, who had five kills and as many
digs. For NYIT, Shelby Cable and Ali Falbo each had seven
kills.
For the match, the Bears were able to take advantage of 15
service aces.
Mercy returns to action on Thursday, October 28, hosting the
University of Bridgeport at 7:00 p.m. The match will be an official
Dig Pink event, as part of Mercy College's Pink Weeks, as the
Mavericks raise awareness and funds for breast cancer and the Susan
G. Komen For the Cure Foundation.
