The Mercy College men's soccer team lost its third straight game today, falling at Queens College, 3-2, in overtime. It is the second consecutive overtime loss for the Mavericks, who fall to 3-4-2 overall, and 0-3 in the East Coast Conference. Queens is now 3-6 overall, and 1-2 in the ECC.

Queens scored the game's first goal of the game, at the 40:57 mark of the first half, as Akinyode Dele settled a ball in the box and scored. As the game entered the second half, Mercy tied the game when senior Raldino Powell (Bronx, N.Y./Garvey Maceo (Jamaica)) collected a loose ball in the box and banged it home.

The Mavericks would then take the lead in the 65th minute when junior Collin Legge (Schodack, N.Y./Maple Hill) sent home a free kick from the right side of the box. The free kick was set up by a yellow card issued to Queens' Kevin Vazquez.

Queens College pushed forward, and just five minutes later, tied the game as Danny Stoker headed home a cross from Kevin Vazquez. The Knights continued to press the Mercy defense, with Mercy keeper Pedro Velazquez-Diaz (Walden, N.Y./Newberry College) making a key save late in regulation to send the contest to overtime. Velazquez-Diaz would make three saves on the day.

In overtime, Stoker scored the golden goal at the 95:45 mark with a turnaround shot from in front of Velazquez-Diaz that found the back of the net.

For the day, QC outshot Mercy 18-10, and committed 17 fouls to Mercy's eight. Queens was also booked four times with yellow cards, as opposed to only one for Mercy.

Mercy has a week to prepare for its next match, a Saturday, October 9 date at St. Thomas Aquinas. The Mavs follow that with a trip to St. Anselm next Sunday, October 10.
