Mercy Men's Soccer Falls in Overtime for Second Straight Game
Box Score The Mercy College men's soccer team lost its third
straight game today, falling at Queens College, 3-2, in overtime.
It is the second consecutive overtime loss for the Mavericks, who
fall to 3-4-2 overall, and 0-3 in the East Coast Conference. Queens
is now 3-6 overall, and 1-2 in the ECC.
Queens scored the game's first goal of the game, at the
40:57 mark of the first half, as Akinyode Dele settled a ball in
the box and scored. As the game entered the second half, Mercy tied
the game when senior Raldino Powell (Bronx, N.Y./Garvey Maceo
(Jamaica)) collected a loose ball in the box and
banged it home.
The Mavericks would then take the lead in the 65th
minute when
junior Collin Legge (Schodack, N.Y./Maple
Hill) sent home a free kick from the right side of the
box. The free kick was set up by a yellow card issued to
Queens' Kevin Vazquez.
Queens College pushed forward, and just five minutes later, tied
the game as Danny Stoker headed home a cross from Kevin Vazquez.
The Knights continued to press the Mercy defense, with Mercy keeper
Pedro Velazquez-Diaz (Walden, N.Y./Newberry
College) making a key save late in regulation to send
the contest to overtime. Velazquez-Diaz would make three saves on
the day.
In overtime, Stoker scored the golden goal at the 95:45 mark
with a turnaround shot from in front of Velazquez-Diaz that found
the back of the net.
For the day, QC outshot Mercy 18-10, and committed 17 fouls to
Mercy's eight. Queens was also booked four times with yellow
cards, as opposed to only one for Mercy.
Mercy has a week to prepare for its next match, a Saturday,
October 9 date at St. Thomas Aquinas. The Mavs follow that with a
trip to St. Anselm next Sunday, October 10.
