Men's Soccer Concludes Season with 2-2 Tie
Box Score Mercy College men's soccer concluded the 2010 campaign
with a 2-2, double overtime tie against Molloy College on Sunday
afternoon. The game was the final game of the year for both
programs. Mercy is now 6-7-4, 1-5-1 East Coast Conference, while
Molloy 5-11-1, 1-5-1 ECC.
Mercy got on the board early, as junior Bujar Lajqi (Bronx, N.Y./Yorktown)
scored less than five minutes into the contest. Classmate Alex
Cruz (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) was credited with the
assist, as he played a ball through the defense, which set up Lajqi
for a one-on-one with the Molloy keeper. That score held throughout
most of the first half. However, it would not stand.
Molloy would score back-to-back goals just 37 seconds apart on
goals from Dan Brown and John Alberda, and took a 2-1 lead into the
intermission.
In the 83rd minute, the Mavericks were pressing on
offense when junior Collin
Legge (Schodack, N.Y./Maple Hill) drew a foul. On the
resulting direct kick, he scored from the top of the box into the
lower right corner to level the ledger at 2-2. For Legge, it was
his fifth goal of the season, tops on the team this season.
In the first extra session, Cruz had a golden opportunity to end
the game on a corner kick, which he headed toward the goal.
Molloy's Michael Hunter made the save, and the game
continued.
Neither team would score again, and the game resulted in a 2-2
tie.
Junior Martin Walsh (Dunlin, Ireland/Colaiste
Ide) made four saves, in what was his second
consecutive start. Hunter made six saves for Molloy.
Mercy concludes the regular season with a 2-1-2 record in the
final five games of the season. In all, the six wins for the
program are three more than a year ago, and the most since the team
went 7-7-3 in 2007.
